Biography
Rashad Benton is Director of Communications for the UCSF Department of Surgery, where he leads communications and editorial strategy and serves as an advisor to the department's Chair and executive leadership. His work sits at the intersection of medicine, science, and storytelling, shaping how the discoveries, people, priorities, and accomplishments of the department are understood within UCSF and beyond it.
A journalist by training, Benton brings an editorial sensibility to academic medicine. He interviews surgeons, physicians, scientists, researchers, and trainees, translating complex clinical and scientific work into stories that illuminate not only what is being accomplished, but why it matters. He also edits, designs, and produces In The Loupe, the department's quarterly publication, and collaborates across UCSF on institutional, digital, and multimedia storytelling.
Before joining UCSF, Benton built a career across journalism, fashion, and higher education, with experience at GQ, Vogue, ELLE, InStyle, and Columbia University. His writing has appeared in Billboard, ELLE, InStyle, ESSENCE, VIBE, and other national publications. He is also the creator of the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Career Conversations, a long-form interview series exploring the careers, ideas, and experiences of influential figures across fashion, media, and culture.
